Milestone Birthday Underwater Portraits

Central FL Underwater Photographer

What better way to celebrate a milestone birthday than with an underwater portrait session?! Did you know that you don't need to be pregnant to do an underwater session? That's right, we can create a beautiful underwater portrait for you no matter what stage of life you are in! Many of the gowns in the client closet will work for non-pregnant ladies and of course you're always welcome to wear something fun of your own if it will work well in the water. We can discuss all of your options at your wardrobe appointment where you can try things on from the closet and/or bring something of your own so we can see if it will work. We aim for you to have two looks/outfits and sometimes we can do an extra if you're in just a swimsuit and time permits.

If you want your face to be under the water for most of your photos, you are going to want to practice some things ahead of time. The first part is practicing breath holds, which you can do out of the water. Take 3 deep breaths to prime your lungs with oxygen and after breathing out that last breath, hold for as long as you are able. That's right, you want to practice holding on the out breath. Why? Because air makes us more buoyant and when you are doing underwater photos, you want to sink, and letting all your breath out and then holding will help you sink better. Another thing to practice is having a relaxed face while you hold your breath. We don't want puffy cheeks or squeezed closed eyes (you don't have to have them open under the water if you don't want to!). This is best done in the shower or tub. If you're in the shower, stand so that water is pouring over your face so that you have to hold your breath but also work to keep your face relaxed while you do this. If you can do this once we get in the water, it will be easier to add in a smile if you want to. Practicing the breathing and relaxed face ahead of time will mean that you will better be able to focus on getting under the water and into a pose while keeping your face relaxed and giving yourself enough breath time to do it. You don't have to have a super long breath hold and we'll do each pose about 3 times to make sure we've got it, but practicing ahead of your session will help so much!

You are also welcome to bring along a few props to incorporate if you'd like. This client was a retired police officer and wanted to commemorate that with her session celebrating a milestone birthday.

I had some of my own underwater portraits done for my 40th birthday and I love them. You are worth celebrating!

Thank you to Ms. D for coming to me for your special birthday underwater session. It was a blast!
