Sunrise Sitter Milestone Session in Historic Cocoa Village

Some sessions start with a giggle. This one started with tears.

This sweet 6-month-old boy took one look at me that morning, a stranger with a camera at sunrise, and let me know exactly how he felt about it.

And honestly? That's a first for me. It's also exactly why I do full sessions instead of minis.

Why Full Sessions Give Nervous Babies Time to Warm Up

A baby who's unsure of me at minute one is not a baby who can't be photographed. He just needs a little time.

With a full session, there's no clock ticking over his head. Mom and dad held him close, we walked, we chatted, and I stayed relaxed and let him get used to me being around. Little by little, he figured out I was safe.

Within 5-10 minutes, he was all smiles. That is the baby I wanted his parents to have photographed: curious, bright-eyed, and fully himself.

If your baby is a little shy or serious with new people, that's okay. I plan for it.

Starting at the River as the Sun Came Up

We began at Waterfront Park in Historic Cocoa Village, right along the Indian River, just as the sky started to change. The colors were soft and glowing, and the whole place was quiet.

Mom and dad held their little guy while we photographed the three of them against the sunrise, including some with just mom and baby and dad and baby. Like many babies this age, he also loved being lifted in the air and I love capturing the flying baby image. The joy exudes from their little faces!

Why We Moved Into the Shade for the Sitting Photos

Once the sun was fully up, the light got bright and harsh, and that's not what I want on a baby's face.

So we moved into the park area, where the trees gave us shade and soft, even light, with a pop of that sunrise light coming in behind baby. This is where we photographed the sitting milestone, the whole reason for the session. Baby on his own, sitting up and looking around at his big new world.

We also did an outfit change here, which is one of my favorite ways to give a milestone gallery some variety. Then we finished with more photos of mom and dad together, with plenty of smiles and laughs.

Why Sunrise Works So Well for Baby Photos in Florida

If you're local, you know how fast Florida heats up. Sunrise gives us:

  • Cooler temperatures, so baby (and parents) stay comfortable
  • Soft, beautiful light for the first part of the session, then easy transitions into shade
  • Fewer people around, so it feels calm and private
  • A baby who's often at his happiest, especially if we plan around naps and feedings

It takes a little planning, but the payoff is worth it.

What Is a Sitter Milestone Session?

The sitter milestone is one of my favorite stages to photograph. Babies are starting to show their personalities, but they're not on the move yet. I usually book it when parents tell me their baby is sitting or very close. If you're not sure, just let me know and we'll find the right timing together.

This session is part of Baby's First Year, a series of milestone sessions that tell the story of your baby's first year. Spots are limited each year, so if you're expecting or have a new little one, reach out early.
