Beneath the Surface Together: A Mommy & Me Underwater Portrait Session

There's a moment — right after they go under — when everything gets quiet.

The splashing stops. The giggles pause. And for just a breath, it's only the two of them. Suspended. Together. The morning light cutting through the water in long, golden beams, catching a little peach tutu and a mama's flowing dress like something out of a dream.

That's the moment I live for.

This particular morning session was one for the books. Mom came in ready, with her daughter — three years old and absolutely fearless. From the very first dip under the water together, it was clear we were going to make something magical.

How the Session Unfolded

We started exactly where every mommy & me underwater session should start: together.

Mom wrapped her arms around her girl, and they went under as one. No hesitation. Just trust.

From there, we moved into something a little more dynamic. With the help of our incredible safety swimmer (who also happens to teach kids' swim lessons — more on why that matters in a minute), we captured them swimming toward each other underwater. Arms outstretched. Eyes open. That split second of reaching, of almost-there. If you've ever watched your child swim to you across a pool, you know the feeling. Now imagine it frozen in time, lit by morning light, beneath the surface of the water.

We followed that with a beautiful frame of them swimming together — side by side, in motion, in sync.

Then came the outfit change.

Peach to Blue

Our first look was all warmth — a soft peach flowy dress for mom, a coordinating peach bodysuit and tutu for her daughter. Dreamy doesn't cover it.

For the second look, we shifted to light blue. Cooler. Ethereal.

And that second look? That's when we got the little one's solo shot. Underwater. On her own. Swimming towards her momma.

It was the perfect close to a perfect session.

Is Your Child Ready for an Underwater Session?

This is the question I get most from moms who are interested but not sure if their little one is old enough or ready. And I love this question — because the answer isn't about age. It's about readiness. Here's what I look for:

They go under without goggles and hold their breath fine.
This is your first green light. If they love going under the water when they're in the pool, not just swimming on top of the water, you've got a child who's comfortable beneath the surface. Goggles aren't an ideal underwater, unless it's a playful child only session, so this comfort is essential. They also should be fine holding their breath without pinching their nose.

They're at ease in the water.
Not fearless. At ease. There's a difference. We're looking for a child who feels safe in the water — who isn't clinging to the wall (or mom) or asking to get out. Relaxed in the water means relaxed in front of my lens and more cooperative for the session.

They can swim.
They don't need to do laps. But they should be able to confidently move through the water and have had swim lessons.

They can take direction.
This is the big one. They need to be able to follow simple cues: "hold your breath," "open your eyes," "smile or relax your cheeks," "reach for Mommy," "swim to me." If your child responds to direction during play, they can do this. And having our safety swimmer — who teaches kids' swim lessons and knows exactly how to speak to little ones in the water — makes all the difference in keeping the session fun, calm, and confidence-building for even the youngest participants.

If you're nodding along to all four of these? Your child is ready.

A Word About Safety

Every underwater session I photograph includes a dedicated safety swimmer/lifeguard poolside or in the water at all times. Ours is not only trained and experienced — she works with children in the water professionally. She's calm, patient, and knows how to keep little ones feeling safe and secure so they can focus on the fun. Your child's comfort and safety is the foundation everything else is built on.

Ready to Make Your Own Magic?

Mommy & me underwater sessions are a great way to capture the love of the water you share with your kiddo(s). I take on a limited number of underwater sessions each season so they fill up fast.

If you've been thinking about it, now is the time to reach out. These spots don't last long — and neither does this season of motherhood.
