A Case for Full Family Sessions | Satellite Beach FL Family PhotographerA Case for Full Family Sessions When it comes to getting family photos taken, it often seems like most families are just looking for a quick family mini session. Maybe finances are tight and they want a cheaper option; maybe they only want a handful of images (and think that means they need less session time); or maybe they just don't know enough about what goes into getting those amazing family photos they want. And mini sessions may work well for some families, but definitely not all. Here are some reasons to consider booking a full family session vs. a mini session...
1. Time Here's the thing about mini-sessions, it may cut your session time in half (or less), but it doesn't change the amount of time you and your photographer are spending outside of the actual session time; prepping outfits, planning the session, preparing your images, etc. Spending a full hour for your session with little ones can feel daunting (and make those mini sessions seem really tempting), but hear me out; it's worth it. If you are working with a lifestyle family photographer (like me), then you aren't going to need to just get your kiddos to sit and smile the whole time. There's no worries about attention spans (which as a mom and former teacher I know are short!), because we are taking breaks and playing games during your session time. I am there to capture your family having fun together; those special moments shared that you want to remember. I am there to capture your kiddos' personalities so that when you look back at your photographs in five plus years, you are remembering that time in your family's chapter and what your kiddos were like. Some kids open up to new people fairly quickly and we can get those personality shots early in the session, and then some, like the littlest one in this beach sunset family session, need almost the whole hour to warm up and really shine. If this session had been cut short, we would have only been able to capture the shy side of her personality and miss out on the smiles! (Be sure to read through the whole article so you can see the big cheesy smile we got towards the end!) Even some older kiddos who might be more shy with new people or have social challenges, like being n the spectrum, means that having more time will help things go much better. When we have the full hour, no one is rushed or stressed that we only have X minutes to get something good.
2. Variety From variety within our location to a variety of groupings and semi-posed to playful images, having a full family session allows us to have time for all of these. Whether you are looking to hang some prints on the wall or fill an album to flip through for years to come, having a bigger variety of photos from your session will help make these a reality. We'll have time to get everyone together and looking at the camera once they've warmed up if that's an important shot for you to have. And we'll have time to capture the connections between each of the family members and make sure there's plenty of photos with mom in them (since it's usually mom behind the camera at home)!
3. Light When having an outdoor family session, especially when it's at the beach, booking a full family session means that your session time is always going to be able to be when the lighting is the best. The session featured in this blog started out pretty cloudy but then the sun peeked out towards then end. If this wasn't a cloudy day, even having a mini session booked more than an hour before sunset would end up with lighting that's much more harsh and no chance for sunset colors in the sky.
4. Customized Experience Don't like the beach? Mini session location or set doesn't fit your family's vibe or your home decor style? No worries when you book a full family session! Everything from the location, time of day that works best for you and your family, and session date is custom to your family. I'll help you with clothing choices and give you feedback on what you choose if needed. We'll discuss what kinds of photos and grouping you want me to capture during your session as well as getting some info about your kiddos' interests so I can connect with them in the first part of our session, helping them warm up to me and show me their true personalities.
5. Level of Service Every session experience starts with a phone call so that I can get to know a little about you and your family, as well as what you want from your session. We plan the session, discuss clothing options, and I'll even scout a new location if you have something in mind that isn't already on my list. For your session time, I keep plenty of buffer in my schedule to allow for quick rescheduling if the weather gets in the way. After your session, I prepare your images for viewing, either in an online gallery for you to view and order on your own or at an in person ordering appointment where I will walk you through every step of the process (from narrowing down your favorites to choosing how to display your images). Once you've decided what you would like to order, each image is retouched (including removing any other people from the background) and prepared for print; whether you'll be printing them on your own by purchasing digital files or having me print them for you on museum grade fine art paper. If you order anything that is ready to hang on the wall, like canvas or framed prints, I'll even come to your house and hang them on the wall for you.

Family sessions at the beach are my favorite, but we can also do them in/around your home or at a non-beach location you like. <3 Kim Owner/Photographer-Artist Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Looking to capture your family as they are right now?
