The Importance of Grandparents Existing in PhotosThe first Sunday in September is Grandparents Day, so I thought this would be the perfect time for a blog post reminding us of the importance of grandparents existing in photographs. It's not as common to see grandparents getting in front of the camera with their grandkids, especially for professional photo sessions. Though it's possible they may exist is photos on your phone, are we printing those to enjoy and cherish? And when, one day, they're gone, photographs are all we will have left to help us remember them. My grandparents had all passed by the time I graduated high school and I don't have many photographs with them; just a few from when I was younger. I don't live by my parents or my in-laws, so when we have them around, I try to be more conscious of taking photos of them with my son; and then print them. I've also included some of the grandparents in one of our professional photo sessions that they happened to be with us for. I know he will cherish those photographs and the memories they incite, just as his grandparents now enjoy the photographs they have with him. One of my favorite things about extended family sessions is capturing the grandparents with just the grandkids and a single set of grandparents are always welcome to join in a regular family session at no additional cost. I've even done a couple that specifically focused on the grandparents and the kids. Grandparents have the reputation for being extra fun (hey, they aren't the parents) and it's so fun to capture that playfulness! Whether you encourage grandparents to be in your next photo session with a professional photographer, or you just take your own candid photos, make it a priority to get them in the frame and then make sure to print the photos!
