5 Photos to Take This Holiday Season | St Marys - Fernandina Beach Child Photographer

The holiday season is my favorite time of year. After a hectic fall, I try to slow down a bit and make sure I make time to enjoy the season with my son and document it as well! This year I've put together a quick post with five ideas for photos you can take of your kiddos during this time of year.

Note: We live in the warm southeast so I don't have pictures of snow, but there are so many more possibilities if it snows where you live!

Christmas Tree Lot/Farm

Do you get a live Christmas tree? Take your camera with you and capture the fun of picking out a Christmas tree. When you get home (or if you use an artificial tree), make sure to capture a few moments of your child(ren) hanging ornaments on the tree!

Christmas Tree Silhouette

In 2016, I chose to do a silhouette for our Christmas card. My husband is finally coming home for good shortly after Christmas (he's in the Navy) and I wanted to represent the wonderful gift we are getting this year. So I had him and our son sit in front of the tree for a silhouette. This is also a fun one to do with just your kiddos. Just make sure you get down lower than I did in this one so you capture most of their bodies silhouetted by the tree.

Settings note for parents: You want to set your exposure for the tree but focus on your subjects and try to get profiles if you can. Your tree may or may not be as bright as mine, but my settings (to give you a starting point and you can adjust from there) were: f/2.8, 1/160 sec, ISO 1000 with a 50 mm lens.

Under the Christmas Tree

The best view of the tree lights is achieved by lying under the tree and looking up into it (especially with how many lights I put on our tree, haha!). My son LOVES lying under the tree and looking up at all the lights. I wanted to capture this special part of his childhood and remember the magic of Christmas through my young son's eyes. (This was our Christmas card photo one year!)

Settings note for parents: Again, this will depend on your tree and how well lit it is, but you want to expose for your child's face and leave the rest of the image a little darker. My settings were: f2.5, 1/125 sec, ISO 1600 with a 50 mm lens.

Gingerbread House/Holiday Craft

We've never built a gingerbread house because of food allergies, so when we found this gingerbread house craft at Michael's, I was excited and my son was thrilled! He had so much fun putting it all together, and since it was mostly foam stickers, he could do just about all of it himself. It was the perfect holiday activity to capture as I'm sure it likely won't make it to see next year, and one made of gingerbread probably wouldn't make it long either!

Holiday Baking

Some of my favorite holiday memories were baking Christmas goodies with my mom. We all especially loved to help her decorate the spritz cookies with sprinkles. My son loves helping in the kitchen as well and documenting this time will give him something tangible to look back on later when he's older. This was just the first day of holiday baking we did this season and I'll certainly be documenting more as we get into making cookies. I wish I had photographs of my siblings and I helping my mom with Christmas cookies!

One last note... while I feel it's important to document our families (and print those photographs!), I also feel it's important to make sure to be a part of the memories and not get too carried away with taking pictures. I try limit myself to 5 or so minutes with the camera and then put it down and be a part of the memories.

Which one of these will you do this season? I'd love to know! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanzaa!

Welcome to the blog R Family! I'm so glad you all were able to get a family session with me before your upcoming move. These two adorable boys had a blast running and playing with bubbles during their session. One of Mom's wishlist shots was to get a family photo for her wall with a beautiful sunset behind them. The sky and boys all cooperated and I was so glad we were able to get the photo she so wanted. We met again to get a few more of just the boys (thus the location and clothing change in the second group of pictures). Here are a few more favorites from this session.

Woodbine - St Marys GA Family Photographer | Lifestyle Family Session

This silly, adorable bunch loved running and playing with bubbles at their fall family session. Their smiles and laughter were infectious and big brother even broke out some dance moves that had us all giggling. We had a good mixture of playful images and some "looking at the camera" shots to fill their album. Check out some favorites from this session...

Other than the bubbles, I think their favorite thing was to race from Mom and Dad to me. Towards the end, the competition started getting to them and we ended up with a funny shot with the littlest running towards me and I couldn't not include it!

Saint Marys GA -Yulee FL Family Photographer | Lifestyle Family Photography in the Park

The S family recently moved to the area and needed family photos. They wanted a laid back lifestyle session to really capture their family before they add another little one to the mix. They even waited to tell the boys they were going to get a little brother or sister until during the session. They were both pretty excited about it! They're going to be fabulous big brothers to the new little one.

We chose this location so we had a place where they could explore and play. And explore and play they did! The session started with cloudy skies, but the sun broke out after a bit and gave us some really beautiful light coming through the trees. This first photo is one of my favorites from this session and was completely unprompted. I loved how playful they were with each other and really enjoyed capturing this sweet family. Sessions like these are perfect for filling an album, and that's just what they did! They have a handful of their favorites to put up on their walls too.

This last one was taken by one of the boys (with some help) and I had to include their shot of their beautiful momma. I love when we can see ourselves as our children see us.

Thank you S Family for allowing me to capture this special time for you all!

Kingsland GA Newborn Photographer | In-home Newborn Photography

The B Family welcomed sweet Miss M into the world and she is so stinking' cute. Her big sister and big brother are so excited to have a new baby sister and often refer to her as "my baby". This little munchkin is going to be spoiled by everyone in the house!

We did her newborn session in her home because no one wants to have to go anywhere in those first couple weeks with a newborn if you don't have to. Mom needs rest, and getting out of the house can be challenging in those early days, especially when you have two other kiddos. She rocked her session and actually slept for most of it, even with a few wardrobe changes. She even gave us a huge smile when getting her picture with Mom!

Check out a few more favorites from this session...

St Marys GA - Fernandina Beach FL Child Photographer | Project 52 - October

Despite being the busiest month of the year for me, I was determined to get caught up on my personal project in October. It's so easy as photographers to get focused on our client work and let the personal stuff slide, but my personal projects are just as important to me, even if I'm not getting paid for them. So many photographers fall in love with photographing their children before turning it into a business and then the reason they fell in love gets lost sometimes. It's important to me to not lose sight of my goals for capturing my son as he grows. This is where I have the freedom to try something new/creative if I want and grow as a photographer. It is through these projects that I have become better at seeing the little moments worth capturing which then translates into better moments captured for my clients. If you're a photographer reading this, don't forget that capturing your family is important too! Here are the photos I took in October. Obviously since I was catching up there are more photos than weeks ;).

39/52 - Little Gymnast

My son loved watching gymnastics on the Olympics this year and would run around the couch doing somersaults and ending with his hands in the air. He's always been a bit of a monkey and I had previously debated letting him try gymnastics but hadn't yet. After the Olympics, he really wanted to do gymnastics so we did a trial class at TNT Gymnastics in Jacksonville, and he LOVED it. I signed him up to start in September and it's now one of his favorite parts of the week.

40/52 - Word on the Street

We went to my mom's in Gulf Breeze during the evacuation for Hurricane Matthew. We were running around the empty culdesac and my son stopped to check out the word on the street. We couldn't figure out why it was there or what it was referring to, but seemed like a fun capture. Project 52: 40/52 - Word on the StreetCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

41/52 - Monkey in a Tree

I mentioned before that he's a monkey, right? Well when we came home from my mom's house, we discovered one of our trees in the backyard had blown over at the base (thankfully not on top of anything). My son discovered that it was perfect for climbing. He was very sad that it couldn't stay for him to climb on forever, but I captured some of his fun climbing it before we cut it down. 42/52 - Deep in Thought

We went to check out a new location in Jacksonville and did some exploring. He stopped for a moment and looked out over the river, and with the framing of the posts, I couldn't resist this capture. The textures made me go black and white with this one. Fort Caroline - Timucuan Preserve - Jacksonville, FLProject 52: 42/52 - Deep in ThoughtCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

43/52 - Sleepy-head

It had been a long day and my son had been staying up too late and he no longer naps during the day unless we are out and about in the car in the afternoon. I was prepping dinner while he had a snack at the table and then I realized it was really quiet. When I went to check on him, this is what I found. You cannot escape sleep, it will find you lol.  child sleeping on a chairProject 52: 43/52 - Sleepy-headCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

44/52 - Pumpkin Carving

My little boy is growing up... he may not quite be 5 yet but he wants to do as much on his own as he is able. That meant this year, he wanted to carve his pumpkin without any help. I did draw the shapes he told me he wanted on it and helped scoop the seeds, but he did the carving himself this year. And yes, we found a white pumpkin this year. It almost seemed like a cross between a pumpkin and a honeydew melon... is that even possible? Project 52: 44/52 - Pumpkin CarvingCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

45/52 - Hawkeye

Thought my son has never seen an Avenger movie, he loves Hawkeye. So of course, that's what he wanted to be for Halloween. I love making his costume each year and found a great and easy tutorial on Pinterest for not only modifying a t-shirt of the costume but also for making a bow and arrows. He loves his costume and probably especially the bow and arrows. Maybe we'll sign him up for archery when he gets a little older. I really wanted to do a fun shoot with him in his costume this year. We went down to Fernandina Beach for the merchant trick or treat Halloween morning but arrived early enough to do some fun pictures first. The brick buildings made the perfect backdrop and my son had fun shooting the arrows. This was one of my favorites but I have so many favorites from this session that I may put them all in it's own post!  Project 52: 45/52 - HawkeyeCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Do you have a favorite? I'd love to know!

Jacksonville FL Family Photographer | Beach Lifestyle Family Photography

I said this in my last post, but I really love lifestyle family sessions and capturing the connections between family members. We get a few "looking at the camera" shots and mostly we play! This sweet, adorable family had so much fun playing at this beach on Big Talbot Island. It's the perfect place for these boys who love to run, climb, and explore! You can see how much love and playfulness this family shares.

I'm so honored to have captured this family again this year and look forward to continuing to watch these sweet boys grow. They have these beautiful memories preserved to look at every day on their walls and in their book. I had so many favorites from this session, it was hard to narrow down!
