Two Moms, Four Boys, and a Whole Lot of Joy

I had the joy (and workout!) of photographing a truly special family—two wonderful moms and their four boys under the age of five. That’s right: one adventurous 4-year-old and a lively trio of 2-year-old triplets. If you’re already picturing a high-energy, giggle-filled session with a little chaos sprinkled in—you’re absolutely right.

Photographing toddlers, especially multiple at once, can be a bit like herding cats. They’re curious, fast, and absolutely uninterested in sitting still just because a grown-up with a camera asks them to. But here’s the magic: with the right mindset (and some play-based photography tricks), sessions like this become more than just a challenge—they become something really beautiful.

The moms came into the session with two clear goals:

1. Capture at least one photo of the entire family together, and

2. Get individual portraits of each kiddo that they could print and hang at home.

Having those goals helped shape the flow of the session. When you’re working with young children, especially toddlers, it’s so helpful to have a few key priorities in mind and to stay flexible beyond that. At this age, embracing the chaos is part of the process. We played games, sang songs, raced through open fields, and found moments of stillness between all the motion.

The result? We got that family photo. We captured the energy and silly grins of each boy in their own little moment. And most importantly, we documented this whirlwind chapter in the life of a family that clearly loves big and laughs often.

One quick tip for families planning a session like this: while it can be tempting to bring extra adults to help, more grown-ups usually just mean more distractions for the kids. The best sessions tend to happen when only the people being photographed are present. Kids respond best when their attention is focused—and a familiar face (or three) off to the side can often pull them out of the moment.

If you're preparing for a session with little ones, remember: it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Come ready to play, let go of the idea of “perfect poses,” and trust that we’ll find the magic in the movement.
