Award Winning Family Photographer | From Maternity & Babies to Seniors & Underwater Space Coast - Brevard County FL Kitchen Fun | Kingsland GA Child Photographer
This session was so much fun! Miss C loves Top Chef and Cupcake Wars so that's what she wanted for her birthday party theme this year. And I can't believe she's going to be 7! We started with chopping up some broccoli and then moved into making muffins. I was really torn between color and black and white with this session so I have a little in color and some black and white. I normally prefer color but I really love how the black and white helps reduce some of the background distractions. And believe it or not, I had to work a bit to get this one to smile since she was so focused on chopping and mixing that she mostly had a concentrating look on her face. <3 Kim Owner/Photographer-Artist Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Need updated photos of your kiddo? Full Session vs Mini Session | Saint Marys GA - Fernandina Beach FL Family Photography
It's that time of year again. School is starting back up and soon families will be looking to book a photo session to get some updated family photos for this year's holiday card. Photographers are releasing available fall dates for family sessions and/or holiday or fall mini sessions. I'm often asked if I offer family/holiday mini sessions, and most of the time I don't have the opportunity to give the full explanation, so they get the short answer: I'm sorry, I don't. I prefer to spend more time with my clients. But the explanation for why I don't do them is important. So I'm writing this blog to shed some light on why I prefer full sessions for families. Sure my short answer usually eludes to why I prefer full sessions, but what does that really mean to someone who doesn't know what an experience with me is like or has maybe only had a mini session and never experienced a full session? Here's why I prefer having a full hour (or longer if needed): 1 - We can take our time. There's nothing worse than being stressed or worried about how your kids will act for pictures and if you'll get that perfect shot you've been hoping for and then on top of that, there's a time limit. What if 20 minutes isn't enough? For some families, it may be enough time, but I'd rather skip the stress and pressure of only having a short time frame. There have been many times where someone takes a while to really open up and feel comfortable in front of the camera so we can get natural expressions. Or maybe a little one fell asleep on the way to the session and wants nothing to do with the camera for 20 minutes. With a full session, we have the time and flexibility to take breaks and regroup when a little one is over it or has a meltdown. If we need to go longer than a typical hour, we can.
2 - Variety. A full session allows for me to capture more variety so you can fill your empty wall in your house with several images from your session or fill an album capturing your family memories.
3 - Customizable. I love providing a custom experience for my families. We can choose a location that has meaning to you and your family or is simply a place that you love. We choose a date and time that will work best for you. There's no need to fit into a mini session schedule at a location that you may or may not want.
4 - High Service. I spend quite a bit of time on clients, an average of about 10 hours from start to finish. I walk my clients through session preparation, including clothing selection, as well as the ordering process and helping to narrow down which pictures they like best and what they want to do with them. I don't want my clients' images left on a hard drive and forgotten about. Your photos should be printed and enjoyed every day, either on your walls or in an album where you can look through them whenever you'd like. I help design wall layouts, as well as the albums, and offer high quality professional products that will last a lifetime. I will even come to your home and hang your wall art for you. This kind of service is just not feasible with mini sessions.
Now, this isn't to say that I never do mini sessions. I do offer child mini sessions (child only), maternity mini sessions (mom only), and baby plan members have the option of a mini session around the holidays for that quick updated photo for holiday cards. You can read more here about a recent family session that truly needed that full session time (and then some) and we ended up with great images that the family loves. This family actually had a holiday mini session with me two years ago before I stopped offering them. After delivering her album we chatted about the difference between the two experiences and she was so glad she had a full session this time and wouldn't want another mini. <3 Kim Owner/Photographer-Artist Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Need to update your family photos or get some on the wall? This post is in no way discrediting the way they do things. I am writing from my point of view and how things work best for me, my business, and my clients. I love to capture the essence of the individual child at that time. This sweet little toddler was a typical almost 2 year old and just wanted to run and explore the playground. He also liked hiding from in the tunnels, haha! It was a hot morning and we definitely worked up a sweat running around! But it was worth it to get those smiles! Here are a few of my favorites from our session.

My son and I went to the organic blueberry farm in Woodbine, GA (formerly Harriett's Bluff Blueberry Farm, now under new ownership as Morning Belle Farms). It looked like rain, but I was determined to get out there and do this video (that I had originally wanted to do in April) so we went anyway. It was cloudy and did end up raining to it's a short video this time. (And a little disclaimer... I was parked for the in the car shots at the end. He started eating the blueberries so I pulled over into a parking lot to capture it.) I've also made the tough decision to put this project on hold until next year and try it again. I took on too many projects and have not made enough time for this one. I also purchased a workshop on videography that I'd like to actually go through and learn more about how to make these better and try again with this project next year. And if any of you reading know me well, you know I'm stubborn and don't like "giving up" on a project once I've gotten started. I'm typically pretty determined to finish, but I'm giving myself grace on this one and not giving up, but saving it for later. So this will probably be my last video fusion for the year, though I may do a couple more if I get around to it!

Celebrating Moms in Front of the Camera | Saint Marys - Fernandina Beach PhotographerMoms... it's so important to get in front of the camera. So often we are the ones always behind the camera taking the pictures of our children and family (especially those of you who are photographers). But how often are you getting in font of the camera too? It's not for your benefit, but for the benefit of our children. Will they have photographs from their childhood with you in them? I guarantee they aren't going to think, gee mom should have done XYZ before having a picture done with me. When my son is grown, I want him to see that I was there too, that I wasn't just on the sidelines taking the pictures of the fun but that I was having fun with him too. I want him to have photographs that help him remember this time in our lives. My mom frequently avoided the camera but thankfully I do have a few snapshots with her in them of when I was little. But I wish I had more. My mom and I have always been really close and I wish I had photographs from when I was younger of the two of us showing how close we've always been. Of course as I got older (and became more obsessed with taking photos), I have dismissed the "I don't like my picture taken" (and she's actually gotten a lot better about it), and insisted on having pictures with her in them, both candid and professional. And I've made it a point to make sure my son has great pictures of him with his grandparents too. There are very few photos of me with any of my grandparents, who had all passed before I graduated high school. Because once we're gone, the only thing we leave behind are the memories our loved ones hold... and photographs. Photographs help us keep those happy memories from fading and go back to that time in our lives. This has become a big driver for me as a photographer and wanting to help families preserve their memories and create the legacy they'll leave behind one day. Especially encouraging mom to be in the photos for more than just the family sessions. Here are the moms I photographed with their children in May and June. I know these will be treasured for many years to come <3.

Summer Family Session | Crooked River - St Marys GASummer birthdays are the perfect reason to have a family session during the summer. These two cuties turned 2 and 4. We ventured to Crooked River State Park to take advantage of the beautiful evening light and then play a little at the ini-golf area.
You'd probably never guess by looking at these photos that Mr. K had fallen asleep on the way to the session and didn't want to wake up or have anything to do with picture taking. We gave him some time and brought out the bubbles and out came the smiles. He ended up being such a ham for the camera too!
Like a lot of moms, Mrs. K was a little worried we might not get everyone looking at the camera at the same time, but we managed to pull it off (and no head swapping needed!)... I may have almost eaten some bubbles to get those smiles too.
The boys enjoyed following the painted animal tracks around the mini golf course and checking out the various obstacles.
And because moms and dads typically don't have a recent photo of just the two of them, I made sure we got one of those too!
We ended up with plenty of pictures to fill an album for this sweet family. Thank you G family for allowing me to capture your family again! <3 Kim Owner/Photographer-Artist Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Need to update your family photos or get some on the wall?
