10 Things I Love About Fernandina Beach FL | Amelia Island Photographer

Fernandina Beach - Amelia Island Photography10 Things I Love About Fernandina Beach - Amelia Island, FLCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

I have lived near Fernandina Beach, FL for almost 15 years now and it's one of my favorite cities. The beauty of Amelia Island and the wonderful community are top notch. There are fabulous beaches, history, nature, and so much more. There are so many things I love about Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach. Here's a list of my top 10.

1) The Beach!

Ok, so this could probably be 1-10 because I LOVE the beach, but I also really love the beaches of Amelia Island. We typically go to the north end of the island or the south end of the island. In the summer, evenings are my favorite time to go to the beach. It's a little less hot and a little less crowded. We will often pack a picnic dinner or maybe grab a bite to eat on the island. I still love going in the evenings the rest of the year and catching the beautiful sunsets, but we'll go during the day too if it fits our schedule better. My son will swim/play in the water pretty much all year round. It's also the best place around to fly a kite!

2) Sunsets

I already mentioned sunsets in #1, and I've always been a sucker for a beautiful sunset. It's one of the things that has had me carrying a camera around with me pretty much at all times since high school. The sunsets on Amelia Island are fantastic when you can catch them. You don't even have to be at the beach for them to take your breath away. This sunset photo was actually taken with my iPhone (because the best camera is the one that's with you!) on the north end of the island near downtown. I was on the island for a meeting and grabbed my camera before leaving in case I wanted to grab a photo or two and I ended up forgetting to make sure there was a memory card in it, oops! Luckily I never have this problem at a session because I have plenty of extras in my bag, I just didn't bring my bag with me this day. I was definitely kicking myself for that one!

3) Downtown Fernandina Beach

I love to just walk around the historic downtown of Fernandina. There's such an array of shops and restaurants to peruse and it has such a lovely feel to it. Some of my favorite shops include: Color It Green, Villa Villekulla Neighborhood Toy Store, Pelindaba Lavender, Twisted Sisters, and The Book Loft. There are so many great restaurants that it's hard to pick a favorite, but 29 South and Amelia Tavern top my list.

4) Fort Clinch State Park

We love to get outside and explore and we all love history too. Historic sites are great places to step back into the past while also getting outside. Fort Clinch State Park isn't just a fort though. There are trails you can hike or bike, camping grounds, a great shaded playground for the kids, and the beach where you'll have a good chance of finding a shark tooth and lots of shells. If you're a nature enthusiast, they have guided nature walks at the Willow Pond on Saturday mornings. If you really get into the history, go to one of the re-enactments on the first weekend of the month and see how they bring history to life.

5) Parks/Playgrounds

Amelia Island has some really great parks for the kiddos. My son's favorite is Egan's Creek Park where there's a giant dome of climbing ropes. There's also great bird watching or fishing along the creek there too and a big field to play in. We also enjoy Pirate Playground behind the rec center. This park has something for a wide range of ages, from sand and water play, outdoor musical play, swings, climbing ropes, and more. And the best part is that it's fenced in so you don't have to worry about your littlest ones running off too far. They're been doing some updates to the other parks as well that are really great.

6) Nature Spots

I mention already but we are big nature lovers. Being out in nature is actually really good for you too. I lead a homeschool group in nature explorations each week and I love having so many nature spots to pick from. One of my favorites aside from the beach is the Egan's Creek Greenway. It's a great quiet place to enjoy a walk and see the diversity of the salt marsh and all the plants and animals you can view there. On our last trip we saw several different species of birds, a marsh rabbit, crab, snake, turtles, and an alligator.

7) Farmer's Market

Who doesn't love a good farmer's market? The Fernandina Beach Market Place is a great spot to grab fresh produce, local homemade goodies, my favorite herbal teas from Tea Nation, and more. It's another great way to support local small businesses and farms!

8) Biking Trails

My family and I love going on bike rides together and with so many biking trails, Amelia Island is a great place for biking. You can bike on the many paved biking trails or go rugged and bike on the beach or on a trail at Fort Clinch or Egan's Creek Greenway. If you love to bike, check out more info on bicycling on the island here

9) Festivals

If you don't mind big crowds, Fernandina has some really great festivals and events. The Eight Flags Shrimp Festival is probably the biggest and there are always a ton of vendors and beautiful artwork, plus pirates!  The Right Whale Festival was recently moved from Jacksonville to Amelia Island to celebrate the return of the right whales to our coastal area. For fellow book lovers, the annual Amelia Island Book Festival is something for you to check out. The Wild Amelia Nature Festival is another great one, and there are many others not on my list! I'd love to hear if you have another favorite that I didn't mention here. *Another of my favorites is listed below.

10) Christmas

There's just something magical about the way Fernandina Beach does Christmas. The lights downtown are fantastic and the annual Dickens on Centre event is one of my absolute favorites and is on our must-do list every December. They have a great kid-zone, live entertainment, vendors (food and homemade goodies), and people dressed in Dickens era costumes adding to the atmosphere.

Magic of Childhood - Harry Potter Inspired Session | St Marys GA - Fernandina Beach FL

This young lady has a special place in my heart. Her Momma and I went to college together and she was a big part of why I started photographing children. She recently turned 10 and loves the world of Harry Potter (as do I) and so it was only fitting that this was her birthday theme this year. I'm sure she can't wait to get her Hogwarts acceptance letter next year!

We had a blast creating these images and channeling the magical world. From casting a spell, to studying the Monster Book of Monsters, flying on a broom, and heading into the Forbidden Forest, we brought a touch of magic to each one.

Little Artist in the Park | St Marys - Fernandina Beach Child Photographer

Birthdays as a kid always feel like a big milestone. If your parents kept things from when you were a kid, you may have been able to look back and see what you wanted to be when you grew up or what you really loved (or maybe were obsessed with) at some point in your childhood. It's fun to see how those things changed over the years.

I've been photographing this family's birthday milestones for 10 years now and I love how different each kiddo is and capturing the story of who they are and what they love at each age. Miss M is the youngest and for her 3rd birthday, we celebrated and captured her love of art (like her momma who is an art teacher!). We set up at the park and Miss M painted with her favorite colors, mostly yellow and orange. She was pretty serious about her artwork but we captured some smiles in there too of course! Happy 3rd Birthday Miss M!

Couple at Sunset on the Beach with Dogs | Amelia Island Family Photographer

Helping a client tell and preserve their story through photographs is one of my favorite parts of my job. After our first phone call, I was so excited for the opportunity to capture this couple and help them preserve their story. You see, they are in the process of adoption and needed some updated photos for their adoption portfolio. These photos are their first impression for moms-to-be who are looking to give their baby up for adoption so they need to capture who they are and not just their adorable smiles (which of course we captured too!). They love hanging at the beach so of course they needed a beach session. They also have two rescue pups who needed to join in too! We grabbed some standard shots that were required for the adoption portfolio (smiling at the camera), and then had little fun and captured some more casual photos walking and hanging out on the beach. They brought a little "Love" sign that we played with too to add to the adoption portfolio and I love the "Love Makes a Family"; so perfect for an adoption story! The sunset was beautiful and I love playing with silhouettes when we have a great sunset. Be sure to scroll to the end for the silhouette! I'm incredibly honored to have been chosen to document this family's journey and I can't wait for the next call <3.

In-Home Lifestyle New Baby Session | Central Florida Baby Photographer

It was an incredible honor to photograph this adorable family after they welcomed their new little man to the world. And yes, I may be a little biased since he's my nephew! Just a week after I booked my trip to visit after he would be here, he decided to come 6 weeks early and spent a week in the NICU. So instead of being around 4 weeks old when I arrived, he was 10 weeks old!

I knew I wouldn't be photographing him as the typical squishy newborn at 7-14 days old since I couldn't plan my trip at the last minute, but one of my favorite things about a relaxed, lifestyle newborn session is that we can get beautiful photos with baby at any age. What I hadn't expected with him coming early is that he would barely fit into my newborn wrap material, but we made it work! One of the things I love with photographing an older baby is being able to capture baby connecting with the parents more than you can with a brand new baby.

This sweet boy has not one, but two amazing mommas. You can see just how much he is loved! In addition to capturing him with his mommas, I love getting those tiny details like his eyelashes, hands, and toes; we quickly forget how little they were but the photographs can bring us back to those times. It's too bad we can't capture that new baby smell! We also incorporated some special items from his grandpa who passed away a little over 7 years ago. He's watching over you Baby J!

I probably have a few too many favorites in this post but it was too hard to choose!

Baby's First Year Milestones - In-Home Newborn Session with Extended Family | St Marys GA

I LOVE when grandparents join in photo sessions. How many of us wish we had more photos of us with our grandparents? I know I do. By the time I graduated high school, all of my grandparents had passed; one of my grandmas passed when I was just shy of 2. I have very few photos of them with me but I cherish the ones I have. I am always trying to make sure I get photos of my son with his grandparents when we can, especially with none of them living close by. One day (hopefully not any time soon), they'll be gone and their memories will be kept alive by the photographs we have of them.

This photo session not only included Grandma and Grandpa, it included cousins too! But this isn't your typical extended family session, it's actually a newborn session to welcome Baby C into the world. But when you have everyone in town together, why not take advantage of it while you can and capture this time together. By now, I have a pretty good idea how older siblings might be around a new baby, but I wasn't sure how different it might be since these older kiddos were cousins. They were super sweet with their new baby cousin, and as expected, when you have a 2 year old involved, they'll pretty much do their own thing. And since I love to capture everyone's true personality and not just cheesy smiles at the camera, I don't mind this at all! We captured the grandparents with all three granddaughters, cousins together, and a couple outside with the big girls's family and grandparents in addition to those that I normally capture for a newborn session.

I'm looking forward to capturing Baby C throughout her first year! She is surrounded by so much love and I'm honored to be able to capture that for her family.

I also installed two beautiful custom framed museum art prints at Grandma and Grandpa's house. I love to provide the full service from photo capture to having the framed print on the wall. I want to make this process as easy as I can for my families and help beautifully preserve their memories.

Baby's First Year Milestones - Sitting Session Milk Bath

I love when clients come up with fun ways to celebrate their baby's (or child's) milestones. For the middle year/sitting milestone for this adorable baby plan member, Mom wanted to do an outdoor milk bath. What a great idea! I gathered the supplies, including some beautiful flowers from Lavender and Grace Studio to float in the milk bath and we chose our outdoor location. We did a few outside the tub first, capturing those adorable baby rolls and attempts to crawl, as well as kisses from Mom. Sometimes babies this age are teething and are much happier being held, so I always encourage moms to be ready to be in the photos too.

Then it was time to load up the tub! I brought warm water so it wouldn't be cold and upset Baby E and added evaporated milk and the flowers... Well, she still wasn't happy about it! She normally loves baths, but sometimes babies just have an off day and that's ok, so we made the best of it and didn't make her stay in there too long.  Crooked River State ParkBaby Milestone Milk Bath Photo Session | St Marys GACopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Crooked River State ParkBaby Milestone Milk Bath Photo Session | St Marys GACopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

It really flies by fast!
