Ms. P thought so too so she surprised her son and his family with a fun family session on the beach while they came to visit this summer. I even convinced her to get in some of the photos too. I love including grandparents in photos!

The girls had a blast exploring and playing at the beach and I loved capturing all the fun they all had together as a family. These fun moments will be treasured by them for years to come and they have beautiful artwork to hang in their home. It was quite windy at the beach that day, but that didn't stop anyone from having a blast, as you can see from some of my favorites below.

Because of the wind we had at the beach that day, I scheduled to meet them again while they were still in town to try a few away from the beach where hair wouldn't be flying everywhere, just to be sure they had something they really loved to hang on their walls. Of course that day it decided to rain! It didn't stop us though, this awesome family just rolled with it and we ended up dancing in the rain for a few more family shots. They ended up loving the beach photos despite the windy hair, but had to get a rainy day print as well because it was so fun! These three were my favorite.   Amelia Island Rainy Day PhotographyCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Here are a few words from Mom on their experience: "Kim is wonderful! She was so patient with our young girls and captured the most beautiful images of them just being themselves. Kim is easy to work with and really takes the time to compose her images. The final results went well beyond our expectations. Our beach shoot was particularly windy (hair everywhere!) so she offered to come back a few days later to take more photos off the beach so we got the perfect family shot. Isn't that amazing?! We cannot say enough positive things about our experience with Kim, and we highly recommend her to photographyour special moments too!"

Thank you V Family for allowing me to capture your memories!

Lifestyle Family Photography | St Marys Family & Child Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/9/lifestyle-family-photography-st-marys-family-child-photographer This summer, I took a trip up North with my family to visit family and friends in our hometowns. Our trip took us to the Cleveland, OH area and Chicago, IL area, with a stop in Nashville, TN on the way home. While in Cleveland, I was honored to photograph a good friend of mine (and college roommate) with her two beautiful little girls. I love celebrating motherhood and capturing images of moms and their children, and getting to do this for my beautiful, sweet friend made it even more special. The Cleveland area has an abundance of beautiful outdoor spaces throughout the Cleveland Metroparks and we settled on this spot along the Rocky River. We explored the riverbank, walked a few trails, and stopped to check out the flowers blooming. With little ones, it's usually best to keep them moving! Here are a few favorites from the session...

Tips for Fun First Day of School Photos | St Marys - Fernandina Beach Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/7/tips-for-fun-first-day-of-school-photos-st-marys---fernandina-beach-photographer Tips for Fun First Day of School PhotosCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

It's back to school time! I'm not sure where summer went but this fall weather we're having is making me long for all things fall. Whether you live in Georgia and are starting school this week, or another state that's not starting quite yet, this post should help you if you want to take great first day of school pictures of your kiddo(s). You don't need a fancy camera either, in fact, all but one of the photos in this post were taken with my iPhone. If you're using your phone like I did this year, I highly recommend a camera app that allows you to have a little more control over your photo taking like Filmborn (my new favorite camera app, available for iPhone users).

And now for my five top tips for taking fun photos of your kids to document the first day of school!

Copyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

1 - Consider taking them the night before the first day. Mornings can be hard enough trying to get everyone ready to go and out the door on time and then add in taking a photo of everyone and you've just upped your amount of morning chaos. Depending on school start times and how well you've prepped your kids or getting up at that time, you may have a child who just isn't ready to have a camera/phone in their face earlier than they're used to being up and out the door. Even if you have an early riser or you've prepped by waking up early the previous two weeks, your child still may be too excited or nervous about the first day to cooperate very well for a photo. And bonus, if you're house faces east, your front door probably has better lighting in the afternoon/evening than first thing in the morning. So get them in their first day of school outfit the night before, practice however they are going to wear their hair, and get that photo without adding too much more to your morning routine.

Of course, if you're homeschooling, you have more leeway as far as when to take your photos or even what you consider the first day of your school year.

2 - Sign Options. When the first day of school photos first became a trend, it seemed it was good enough to just write out or print out a piece of paper that said "First Day of # Grade" on it. Now, you can buy templates and have them printed for your child to hold on their first day to show various interests in addition to what grade they're starting (you can find free ones too by googling). A good old chalk board, like the one I used, or a white board (currently available in the dollar section at Target) are perfectly acceptable in my book. No need to go all out if that's not your thing.

3 - Light/Location. Consider the light when choosing your location. Outside will typically give you the best lighting, assuming you're not having to do them before the sun comes up (another reason to do them the night before!). The most common location I've seen is usually in front of the front door or in the front yard. Don't feel like you need to use either of those locations if the light happens to be better in your backyard.

4 - Forget the "smile" and "say cheese". If you want a genuine smile, don't use those words! (In fact, those words are pretty much banned at my sessions, haha!) Try asking them what they are most excited about for school or get them talking about something they enjoy. You can also tell them silly jokes or act like a goofball, whatever you know will make them giggle! If you're child isn't a big smiler, be content with just having them look at you and don't worry so much about them smiling.

Copyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Copyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

5 - Let them have fun! There's nothing that kills a mood more than getting yelled at for not smiling for the camera. Let them be silly and have fun. This is another bonus for doing the photos the night before as you won't be rushed to hurry up and get the photo. Keep snapping those photos while they're being silly and you're bound to end up with a good one.

Happy Picture Taking and Happy Back to School!

Family Portrait Session | St Marys GA Family Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/7/family-portrait-session-st-marys-ga-family-photographer I met this sweet family through the homeschool co-op we joined last year. They've had more than their fair share of challenges and you'd almost never know when first meeting them. Mom has been battling cancer and the youngest was recently diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. They've never had family portraits done and I was honored to remedy that for them! It turned out to be a celebratory session as Mom is now in remission! I pray that this is a permanent remission and these photographs will remind them all of the love and strength that brought them through this difficult time in life.

I couldn't pick a favorite from this session as I loved so many of the photos. I loved capturing each individual as well as the connections and love they share with each other. Sometimes it takes older kids a little longer to get comfortable in front of the camera, so I started with individuals to help them loosen up. My son has recently become obsessed with knock-knock jokes and since they were fresh in my mind, I used the silliness of the corny jokes to help break the ice.  After individuals portraits, we got a photo of Mom and Dad before getting the whole crew together. Then I made sure each kid had a photo with mom before we headed to the playground for some fun, playful captures. Even older kids can have fun on a playground!

Why I love Lifestyle Photography and what is it anyway? | St Marys - Fernandina Beach Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/7/why-i-love-lifestyle-photography-st-marys---fernandina-beach-photographer The term “lifestyle photography” is widely understood by photographers, but if you’re not a photographer, you may not know what that means and why it matters. I happen to love this style of photography so I wanted to take some time to explain what it is to me and why I love it.

Three of the more common styles of photography you may have heard of are posed/traditional, lifestyle, and documentary/photojournalistic. To me, lifestyle is sort of like a halfway point between documentary and posed as I combine elements of both. We have lots of fun playing and interacting but I give direction when needed and use my knowledge of posing for those coveted looking at the camera shots and to make sure you look your best in your photos. Understanding what style you like when you’re searching for a photographer will help ensure you get the images you are envisioning from your session.

Here are a few reasons I love lifestyle photography sessions:

1 – Perfect for young families. Most of my clients have young children and young children tend to not be still for very long. Giving them the freedom to play and capturing their joy makes for much less stressful sessions. We still get a couple with everyone looking at the camera, but they don’t need to sit still for the whole session.

2 – Capturing the moments and relationships. What I love most about my job is capturing the sweet moments shared by family members and their relationships with each other. These are the kinds of images that bring us back to those moments in time and help us remember the love we shared. The ones you look at and can’t help but smile as you remember how much fun you had together.

3 - Posed to look un-posed. When I do use posing, my goal is for everyone to look natural while looking their best.

Lifestyle Family PhotosCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Lifestyle Family PhotosCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography Lifestyle Family PhotosCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

4 – Flattering angles and making you look good. Getting the right angle of view is super important to how you’ll look in a photo. Whatever is closest to the camera will look larger so I’m always keeping this in mind when determining which angle to shoot from and how to pose you for natural posed images. I use my knowledge of posing to tweak your posture and position to make sure the camera is taking off 10 pounds not adding it.

5 – Direction. If you aren’t normally in front of a camera or feel weird or awkward in front of a camera, having someone give you direction, whether in a posed setting or play setting, can help you to feel less awkward and help in getting naturally beautiful photographs that you’ll love and want to display.

For me, it’s not just about capturing a photograph with people in it, it’s about truly capturing the people in the photograph. I want to capture the essence of each person I photograph and the relationships between family members. These are your memories, what do you want to remember about this time in your/your child’s life?

This is exactly the kind of store we need here. As a naturally-minded momma, with naturally-minded mom friends, I knew this was going to be a great thing. I finally made it in to see the shop and it smelled so lovely and Whitney was very welcoming and friendly. I've been wanting to revive my Small Business Spotlight series and knew this would be the perfect shop to get the features going again.

What inspired you to open your business?

My son was my inspiration for opening my business. I was previously an environmental scientist and special education teacher. After finding out that my son is high-functioning autistic, I realized that I would need more flexibility and time to help him as he grows. I also discovered how essential oils really helped him during difficult times. People began asking me for products, and I felt a calling. So, I decided to find a space and offer my handmade products to everyone!

Who is your biggest inspiration in life/business?

My biggest inspiration is my son and my family in both my life and my business.

What is your favorite quote?

Don't be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try.

What do you love most about what you do?

What I am providing people with a healthy alternative to the skin care products out there loaded with chemicals and toxins. I love hearing everyone say, "It smells so good in here!" and "It is so relaxing in here!" when they come into my shop. I love that I can help others who have questions about a natural approach to health and wellness.

What is your biggest success with your business to date? What are you most proud of?

My biggest success so far is opening!! I have also had huge success with my Rejuvenate Butter, which is a blend of essential oils and carriers that have shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects. Everyone who has purchased it, has raved about it.

I am most proud of my events for special needs families, as it is a way for the children to do a fun activity and for the parents to socialize and support each other.

Do you have a memorable moment in your business that you can share with us?

My first First Friday in downtown St Marys. It was the second day that my doors were open, and I scrambled to find a musician to play out front. It all came together perfectly, and there was so much energy in here. I didn't know that many people could fit in my little store. It felt like a sign that everything will be ok, and that I made the right decision opening my shop.

What can your clients expect from you when they order/purchase from you?

Friendly and helpful service. I am also very honest, and want people to find the right product for their needs. even if I have to create a custom product (which I love to do!). They should also understand that every product is fresh and made with organic ingredients. My products do not contain preservatives so they must be used within two years.

Cottle and Gunn- They always have new things, and you never know what creative items you will find in there!

The Beauty of Maternity Mini Sessions | Amelia Island Maternity Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/6/the-beauty-of-maternity-mini-sessions-amelia-island-maternity-photographer There are only a select few mini sessions that I offer, and a maternity mini session is one that can be added to a newborn session or baby plan. Maternity minis are momma only so you get the whole session to yourself. It's the perfect way to celebrate the miracle of pregnancy and get some beautiful images to remember it by. And you won't have to listen to your husband grumble about yet another photo session (or maybe he's deployed or out at sea) or worry about whether your children will be in a good mood. Even though I work to make sure you have a good time either way, for some, it's just nice to have a little time to yourself with the little one you're carrying. Maybe pamper yourself by getting your hair and makeup done before your session and take the evening to yourself.

Here are two maternity mini sessions we did at the beach with two dresses I recently made. The first one is a mostly lace gown for a momma who feels comfortable enough to show a little but doesn't want her bare belly showing. The second is for a momma who wants to bare her belly and it's fun to see what shapes we get from the wind.

In-Home & Outdoor Lifestyle Newborn Photography | Saint Marys Newborn Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/6/in-home-outdoor-lifestyle-newborn-photography-saint-marys-newborn-photographer While it's true that most newborn sessions take place in the first two weeks, that doesn't mean you can't have a newborn session with a baby over two weeks. Since my photography style is lifestyle and not very posed, newborn session can take place anytime in the first month while baby is still little. This sweet little boy was 4 weeks for his session and slept beautifully for the first part when we took his solo portraits. He was awake for the family portion of the session and I loved capturing his parents and older siblings interacting with him. To me, that's the best part of photographing an older newborn.

We started the session with his solo newborn portraits since he was asleep when I arrived. Mom had this adorable fox hat and diaper cover for him to wear and loves outdoor portraits so we did his outside. And being in the south, it was plenty warm enough for him to be nice and cozy too!

After taking a nursing break, we did some indoor portraits with the family in their sun room overlooking the river. These were definitely some of my favorites of the session.

Underwater Pool Session | St Marys GA Child Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/6/underwater-pool-session-st-marys-ga-child-photographer Over the last couple of years, I've seen some really amazing and beautiful underwater photography and knew I wanted to try it. I'm always taking photos of my son at the beach and wanted to at least be able to capture all the fun he has in the waves without worrying about my camera getting wet. So earlier this year, I purchased an underwater housing for my camera so that I could give it a try. After playing with it at the beach, I knew I needed to try it in the pool. I knew it would be a big challenge and more difficult than shooting above water, but I had no idea how truly challenging it is until I did it. It's definitely something I want to do more of though and I'm always looking to challenge myself and improve my photography skills. The editing involved was also diffferent from what I normally do...make sure to check out the before and after below! I'm looking forward to being able to invest in a better housing for my camera soon!

This session was done with some older kids and it was fun to capture their sibling interactions too.

Fun Mom Project | St Marys - Fernandina Beach Motherhood Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/6/fun-mom-project-st-marys---fernandina-beach-motherhood-photographer I've followed several projects that other photographers have done that feature something special about motherhood. I loved what they captured and contemplated if there was something like that that I could do. I didn't want it to be the same thing though. Then I finally figured it out... I wanted to find a way to feature moms having fun with their kids. So often, Dads are seen as "the fun ones" and moms are more often the ones taking the pictures of Dad having fun with the kids. But Moms are fun too! And Mom needs to be present in the photographs so the kids remember she was there having fun with them too, it wasn't just Dad! My idea arose from all the fun I have with my own son and how often I would document him doing something fun or him with my husband, but rarely was I getting in the photos too. So often, I would think, man I wish there was someone here to take a picture of the fun we're having. I realized I had already been capturing these moments whenever I saw them happening during family sessions (and of course with Dads too). So this year I began the Fun Mom Project. I had originally hoped I would have an image for every day in May but I didn't start it quite early enough and had several reschedules or cancellations. So I ended up with one a week for May but this is just the beginning. I plan to continue this project and I have some ideas for what I might turn it into later when I have a bigger collection (more on that to come!).

For each mom featured in the project, I try to capture something fun they do with their kids and then have them write a little something to include with their photo. These aren't traditional portraits but they're something that will help these children look back and remember how much fun they had WITH their Moms.

This first momma I have known for 5 years. She has so much knowledge about nature and plants and I loved seeing her teaching her boys about something they could dig up from the backyard and eat. And when you're a kid, digging in the dirt with mom is pretty high on the fun list.

Fun MomCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

"There's a short window of time to impress upon a child's memory the smell of the soil on a warm day, the feel of the earth under bare feet, the taste of wildflowers and herbs from mom's garden. I want the sound of waves crashing on the sand, and the tug of the ocean on their ankles, to be engraved on my children's souls. The only way we can save our planet, is to cultivate a deep and sustaining love for every part of life and death on this Earth, within our children, and hope we're not too late." ~Jess, Fun Mom

When you love the beach, there's always fun to be had. These two love playing in the sand at the beach but little Miss M had always been hesitant of the waves. I captured them playing in the sand, but then she decided to give the waves a try and she ended up loving it! This photo captured her joy the first time playing in the waves with her mom. I love that I was there for it and captured this special moment for them.

Fun MomCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

"I absolutely love our time at the beach together. I have always loved the ocean and I am so excited to share its beauty with my daughter. Seeing her face light up when we find a really cool sea shell and hearing her infectious giggle as the waves splash up on her are memories I will always cherish and I hope she looks back on these photos some day and remembers our little adventures. " ~Liz, Fun Mom

Another Momma who's super special to me, this mom is such a great boy mom and I witness her having fun with her boys often so I knew she needed to be part of this project. We did their session in their backyard and they have a great tree swing that she got on with her youngest. I know her boys will look back at their childhood and remember how fun they had with their mom, and now they'll have some photographs to help them remember.

Fun MomCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

"I hope my boys remember that we laughed a lot, a lot more than we fussed--that it was ok to make messes and many, many mistakes. That we'd get up, dust ourselves off and try again. That it was a lot more fun to be real than to be perfect. That they could come to me with any problem and feel heard and acceptance. That they are loved more than all the stars. Infinitely." ~ Amy, Fun Mom

The last one I have for now is a mom whose family is living full time in an RV. They'll soon be hitting the road and traveling the country. What an amazing and fun experience that will be for them! They also love to read, and although it's a different kind of fun than the more active fun with first think of with kids, reading together is still fun (and my son loves to read as well). So we captured them reading together.

Fun MomCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

"One of our favorite things to do as a family is read. It inspires us to use our imaginations and we enjoying diving into the stories. We also enjoy using this time to connect to one another and making the most of this quality time. If you were to look around our house you'd see books in all sorts of nooks and crannies. Some of our favorites are "Oh the Places You'll Go," "My Monster Mama Loves Me So," any of the Llama Llama books, as well as the classics and anything from Lamplighter Ministries." ~ Tiffany, Fun Mom

Best Summer Session Locations | St Marys & Amelia Island Family & Child Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/6/best-summer-session-locations-st-marys-amelia-island-family-child-photographer The hot summer days are here. And with that, the humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Between the heat, humidity, and summer travels, it's no surprise that having family portraits done is not on most people's minds. But there are so many fun things about summer to capture, beautiful sunsets and landscapes, and lighter schedules while the kids are out of school. But where can we avoid the heat and get some beautiful family portraits, you might ask? I'm here to give you some of my favorite summer session locations to beat the heat and capture the fun of summer with your family.

The Beach

This first one might be the most obvious, but the beach is a great location to have a summer session. Sunrise or sunset are the best times for both temperature and light. Even on the hottest days, we'll most likely have an ocean breeze to help it not feel so hot. Plus, we can capture your family having fun splashing in the water! Amelia Island and Big Talbot Island are my favorite beach locations.

Crooked River State Park

Probably my favorite location that isn't the beach, Crooked River State Park in St Marys is a great place to do a morning session in the summer before it gets too hot and buggy. If we get a breezy day, the evenings aren't too terrible if you bring bug spray. The light in the evening is lovely. There's plenty of shady spots to keep the sun at bay, trails to explore, and playgrounds to play. You can even do a round of mini golf!

Your Home

Yep, we can totally do a session at your home! If your home is well lit, we can do the whole session inside. This kind of session is a lifestyle session so there's not much posing and I'm just there to capture your family in their element (with some direction too!). For families with younger kids who aren't going to make it to sunset without turning into a pumpkin, this is a good option for earlier in the day when they're happier. I can also capture your family playing in the yard or in and around the pool if you have one!

Baby's First Year Milestones | Baby Photography - Saint Marys GA http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/5/babys-first-year-milestones-baby-photography---saint-marys-ga This sweet, adorable baby seriously has the best smile ever. And I may be a little biased but I can't count how many times people stopped to say how cute she is. I really can't blame them! Here are a few favorites from her sitting milestone session.

I love to capture the details that we normally capture for newborn sessions, those little hands and feet, the eyelashes, etc. Those small things that are so easy to forget without a photograph to help us remember.

Baby's First Year - 6 Month Milestone | Saint Marys GA Baby Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/5/babys-first-year---6-month-milestone-saint-marys-ga-baby-photographer This was the perfect way to start my week with this sweet, smiling baby's 6 month milestone session on a Monday morning. Her woodsy session goes with her nickname too. She was all smiles and is already on the move and crawling everywhere!

Before & After | Maternity Photographer | Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach, FL http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/5/before-after-maternity-photographer-amelia-island-fernandina-beach-fl It isn't often that I use a lot of Photoshop in my images. I work to get it right in camera and then process mostly with Lightroom, but there are times when an image calls for a little more, whether it's to remove a distraction, some retouching that's better done in Photoshop, or really taking an image to another level. This image called for a little bit of everything so I thought it would be fun to do a before and after post. The before image is straight out of the camera (SOOC). I was shooting quickly to capture the movement in this momma's gown as my lovely assistant (read husband) tossed the second layer of the dress and tried to get out of the way. He's fast, but not that fast...

SOOC/BeforeCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

When I went through the images after the session and saw the shape the dress made with the wind and my husband tossing it, I knew this image needed to be taken to the next level. It wasn't enough to develop the image and remove my husband from it, because no matter how much I played with the crop, it just wasn't right with what I had to work with in the frame. I really wished I had more beach/ocean to the right, so it was something I had to add to achieve my vision.

100 Days of Black & White - Project 365 | April Favorites http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/5/100-days-of-black-white---project-365-april-favorites I've completed my 100 Days of Black and White project and am continuing to photograph my family/life every day but now there's more color! I really loved the push of shooting in black and white for 100 days and not being able to rely on color contrast to help my subject stand out and tell the story I want to share. It really made me look at the light and I had a lot of fun shooting more at night. I predict I'll be doing more black and white conversions in the future but I'm glad to be back in color! Here are a few of my favorites from April.

This was my first time playing with my underwater camera housing. We had a ton of fun in the waves and this was the same day I took my recent award winning image too!

This is one of those time when I had a vision of something I wanted to capture. I really wanted to capture my son looking at the stars because he loves all things space right now. I knew the best place for my vision was the beach and because my son has a hard time being still long enough for a long exposure, I knew my husband would need to be with him. I really wanted him looking through his telescope at the stars but I knew he wasn't ready to be still like that just yet. We tried sitting and laying down and this one worked best. I definitely want to try this one again!

Copyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

We regularly have a pizza and movie night together as a family so it was something I wanted to make sure I captured in my project. My son likes to help, which involves helping himself to the pepperoni and "cheese" (we're dairy free). This ended up being the perfect capture of our pizza night shenanigans.

This year was my son's first official season to t-ball. Two years ago, he was in a smart start pre-t-ball program through the Navy base and last year we missed signups (because who is thinking about t-ball in January??). He really loves it and I think he'll likely choose baseball over gymnastics when he passes level 3 and he'd have to join the team or be done. I've captured a few of his games and since we had an evening game, I wanted to try a panning shot of him running so that everyone else on the field isn't a distraction to my subject/story, and I just love panning!

Copyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

For Easter, my son received a space shuttle kite so naturally we had to go to the beach to fly it. It was the perfect way to spend our evening and the he had a blast flying it (it flew really well too!)

Copyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

I wonder if I will ever tire of taking pictures of my son sleeping. My guess is probably not. Tuesday are long days for us between homeschool co-op, errands, and gymnastics. He almost always falls asleep on the way home and we just plop him on the couch until dinner is ready if he doesn't wake up when we get home.

Back to color! This one was a favorite from my continued Project 365. I've been wanting to take a picture of my son doing a cartwheel and he finally decided to do cartwheels at the park one evening.  Copyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Do you have a favorite? I'd love to know!

Childhood Photos at the Park | Saint Marys GA Child Photographer http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/5/childhood-photos-at-the-park-saint-marys-ga-child-photographer Meet Mr. Q. This adorable little boy just turned two and what better way to celebrate than with updated photos of him doing the things he loves. We met at the park where he started to explore and then brought out some of his favorite cars to play with too. Once he realized there was a playground, that's exactly where he needed to be! I brought out a whoopee cushion too, which meant lots of giggles! At the end, I gave him a lollipop and I'm so glad I continued to capture him doing that time because those are some of my (and Mom's!) favorites. And I always encourage mom to be in a photo or two, our children will cherish those photographs the most. It was a fun session full of throwing pine cones, climbing, playing with cars, sliding down slides, laughing at the whoopee cushion, and being an adorable two year old!

Mother's Day Gift Guide http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/5/mothers-day-gift-guide Ok, dads, this post is for you! (And ladies, you can use some of these ideas for your own moms too of course.)

Mother's Day is almost here. A day to celebrate Mom and thank her for all she does. If you haven't already figured out what to get her, I've put together a few ideas for you. I did a quick Facebook poll of fellow moms to see what was on their wish list and then added a few other things I personally love that other moms might like too.

1. Hotel Room/Uninterrupted Sleep  - This was the most common response from my poll, especially from moms with young kids. Being a parent of little ones is exhausting and often times mom is up i the middle of the night or up late/early trying to catch up on all the things that need to be done and thus not getting enough sleep. Some moms specifically requested a hotel room where they could sleep alone for a night, uninterrupted. If you want to go all out and pamper her (and you're local), you could splurge for a room at the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island or Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. Or at the very least, take the kids out of the house to play at a park/zoo/museum and let mom take a nap. Just make sure the house is clean and laundry is caught up so she doesn't end up using that time to catch up on those!

2. Pampering - What mom wouldn't want some sort of pampering? You could book her a massage, manicure/pedicure, or gift her some fun pampering goodies.
A few options for those local to me that come highly recommended are: Ponte Vedra Inn & Club Spa, Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa (Ponte Vedra), Lemongrass Salon & Spa (Jacksonville), or Dome Healing Center (Fernandina Beach).
Some of my favorite handmade pampering products can be purchased from Byrds Nest Soap in Jacksonville (you can also order from her website). I love her lip balm and bath bombs! Make sure Mom gets some uninterrupted time to soak in a bath if you go with this option!

Amber Dreams Jewelry Custom Amber NecklaceCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

3. Jewelry - There's always a nice piece of jewelry from your favorite jeweler (or Tiffany's!), but there are a couple other options that might be the perfect gift. There are two handmade jewelry companies I've discovered and love... one is Amber Dream Jewelry and the other is Wonderment Jewelry. Amber Dreams Jewelry specializes in handmade gemstone and amber pieces. Wonderment Jewelry specializes in handcrafted silver jewelry designed with little fingers in mind (know as Mama Metal). Both have ready to go options or you can customize a piece especially for Mom. I love my custom amber necklace from Amber Dreams Jewelry (pictured above) and my custom beach inspired piece just arrived from Wonderment Jewelry and it's absolutely beautiful.

4. Coffee/Tea/Wine - Yes, what gets many moms through motherhood! Pair Mom's favorite coffee, tea, or wine with a fun coffee mug or wine glass. If you haven't tried Bold Bean Coffee in Jacksonville, you're missing out. They have really great coffee and they roast it right in Jacksonville. I often find fun mugs and glasses at TJ Maxx or Home Goods. I'm a bit of a mug collector myself so I love mugs (my recent favorite pictured above from Kennedy Space Center). If Mom enjoys reading, you could include a new book for her to read (or gift card for a book) and then schedule time to keep the kids occupied so she can relax and read it!

5. Handmade Art/Craft from the Kids - You really can't go wrong here as long as you put in the time (that means no last minute draw a 5 minute picture kind of thing!). Moms love handmade gifts from their littles. Color Me Happy Pottery in Brunswick is a great place to take your kid and have them paint a mug for mom (to go with the coffee or tea in #4!). There's also Doing Dishes Pottery Studio in Jacksonville and St Johns.
If you're feeling adventurous, here's a link for ideas of things you can make with the kids at home: 90 Handmade Gift Ideas for Mother's Day.

Family Photography - Perfect Gift for Mother's DayCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

6. Photographs - Of course this list would not be complete (or on my blog!) without including photos! This also came up several times in my poll. And of all the things on this list, this is what will last the longest and mean the most. I know some dads are hesitant to do family photos (or pay for them), but I promise you, this will make Mom so happy! Even if it's just photos of Mom and the kids, because moms are often the ones behind the camera documenting the kids or the kids with Dad. Find a photographer who will make it easy on all of you and help you plan all the details and deliver a beautiful finished product that you can all cherish for many years to come. If a professional photo session isn't in the budget/priority list, make sure to take some snapshots of mom with the kids, and not just the cheesy ones but ones of them playing and having fun too. Then print them out and put them in an album or a frame, don't leave them on the computer (or your phone). You can also go through the photos already sitting on the computer and get them printed out and into an album to give to Mom. Artifact Uprising and Picaboo are two of my favorite album companies if you want to create your own album to gift for Mother's Day.

We're flying in my friend and favorite Day in the Life Photographer, Willy Wilson of Life Unstill Photography, to take photos of our family the week after Mother's Day and I'm so excited! I am always documenting my son and my husband but I'm not in front of the camera nearly enough and I want my son to remember that I was part of all the fun too!

Now you have a few ideas you might not have thought of before! If you'd like to gift Mom with a photo session, give me a call 912.322.6714 and we can discuss details (and I'll get you a gift card to give her to open on Mother's Day!).

Childhood sessions are one of my favorite sessions to do. I love documenting children and who they are right now.

Childhood SessionCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

These sessions started as themed birthday sessions that I did each year for a close friend of mine.

Kingsland, GAThemed Childhood SessionCopyright Kimberly Tank art & Photography

Then I started my business and began doing personal projects in which I capture my own son and the little things I want to remember about his childhood.

Childhood Memories | Personal ProjectCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

What was once a "birthday mini" has evolved into capturing the essence of a child and what they love. For some clients, this is still a great way to celebrate a birthday and have updated photos. Incorporating something your child loves can make the session even more fun and meaningful.

Fernandina Beach, FLChildhood SessionCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

But if your child is like mine and loves the beach, playing in water (or mud!), and has a birthday in the middle of winter, you might miss out on capturing those fun elements if you are only thinking about birthday photos.

Summertime Childhood Moments | Personal ProjectCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Summer is just around the corner... school will be out and the days are long and full of fun things your children love to do. Why not capture those memories and have a beautiful portrait that shows who your child really is right now?

Naval Air Station Jacksonville | Military Homecoming | Welcome Home Mr. S http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/4/naval-air-station-jacksonville-military-homecoming-documentary-photography When a fellow Navy wife and homeschooling momma contacted me about documenting her husband's homecoming, I was thrilled! I have been wanting to document a homecoming for a while now, but with my own husband gone so much I hadn't had the opportunity until now (hooray for shore duty!). Mrs. N also wanted updated individuals of each of her children and a family portrait for her wall.

When we arrived, we started with individuals while we were waiting for the plane's arrival. Adorable bunch, aren't they? They are truly wonderful children and it was such a pleasure photographing them and seeing them interact with each other.

Once Dad was off the plane, the kids all ran to him and piled up until all five of them had him surrounded in a giant hug.  Navy pilot homecomingMilitary Homecoming Session | Naval Air Station JacksonvilleCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Then it was Mom's turn to welcome Dad home. Navy pilot homecomingMilitary Homecoming Session | Naval Air Station JacksonvilleCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

And there was lots more hugging.  Navy pilot homecomingMilitary Homecoming Session | Naval Air Station JacksonvilleCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Before I left, we gathered everyone in front of one of the planes in the hangar to get their family portrait for their wall. It's going to be the perfect focal point of their family photo wall. I helped Mrs. N by configuring a couple of layout options for her wall with this and the individuals of the kids. I can't wait to see the final product when everything is up! And of course, I couldn't leave without getting one of just Mom and Dad.  Navy pilot homecomingMilitary Homecoming Session | Naval Air Station JacksonvilleCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Thank you H Family for commissioning me to document this special day for you. It was an honor and privilege to photograph and get to know your family more!

100 Days of Black & White - Project 365 | March Favorites http://www.kimberlytank.com/blog/2017/4/100-days-of-black-white---project-365-march-favorites I'm in the final stretch of my 100 Days of Black & White project and am liking my black and whites more as the project progresses. I definitely think I'll be doing more black and white conversions with my work after doing this project. I like how black and white can reduce some distractions and forces me to focus on the light and how the light enhances my subject since I can't rely on color to draw attention. I do miss color, though, so I'll be glad to have it back again, especially now that's it's spring and the color is coming back everywhere. I'm already planning my next 100 Days Project and am super excited about it. It will be photography related, but not involving a picture every day, so I'll continue my project 365 and take a picture every day for that but it won't be connected to my 100 Day Project for the most part for the rest of the year. If you'd like to join our 100 Days Project group, you can join on Facebook or simply tag your project on Instagram with #100dayscollective for a chance to be featured. You don't have to be a photographer, there are a lot of other creatives in the group as well!

Ok now for March favorites....

My son loves to ride our legs around as we try to walk through the house. I remember doing this with my dad when I was a kid and it was always so much fun. These are the moments I want to capture. The fun little things that make up his childhood. Not only so that I can look back and remember them when he's grown, but so he can too.

We headed back to MOSH this month and had some fun in the body exhibit. My son was dancing in front of the camera that (somewhat) mirrors your movements with a skeleton not he screen when I took this. 100 Days of Black & WhiteCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

This was the product of a vision I had in my head for a shot I wanted to get (and possibly submit to a competition). It didn't work out as well as I'd hoped (I'm not so steady when swinging a 5 year old around) so it's not a sharp image. But I still love the capture and the it's easy to see he was having fun! 100 Days of Black & WhiteCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Our first "baby", Liby, is getting older (she'll be 12 in July) though she still acts like a puppy sometimes. We don't get to take her out as often as we used to (just keeping track of a young child was enough for me for quite a while). We were headed to the park and to take a walk so we figured it would be good to take Liby with us. She loves to get out, especially for walks, and my son loves to walk her too. (Thankful for all the years of training we did with her when she was young!) 100 Days of Black & WhiteCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Last year, we missed ball signups so this year we made sure to look ahead of time and mark it in our calendars so we didn't miss it. A good friend of ours coaches too so we were able to get him on a team with one of his good friends. They had their first game last month and I of course made sure to have my camera to capture everything. I chose this one for my back and white photo for the day, taken while they were getting ready in the dugout. I didn't have an unobstructed view, so I used the fence to frame him.

The weather has been beautiful and we are a family who loves the beach, so we made a lot of beach trips in March. My son doesn't care how cold the water is, he loves to play and jump in the waves. I find this one a little funny, like he's getting ready to attack the waves.  100 Days of Black & WhiteCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

Some time in the last couple of months after turning 5, my son has suddenly started doing big kid things left and right. First it was deciding he was done with the training wheels and riding like a pro (he had a balance bike for several years so the pedaling was new to him with his new bike this Christmas). Then came swinging. He would previously refuse to try pumping his legs to keep swinging and now all of the sudden he's doing it like he could do it all along He still needs(wants?) someone to get him started, but then he doesn't need us to keep pushing him anymore. Gosh, they really do grow up so fast!

I'm still getting in the frame, and it's often when I realize everyone is in bed and I haven't taken my photo for the day yet, haha. Up late working on a few things while catching up on DVR on this evening. 100 Days of Black & WhiteCopyright Kimberly Tank Art & Photography

I came across something on Facebook talking about an event that happens once a year in Jacksonville near the beach... for about two weeks, thousands of fireflies light up in the woods just after dark. I grew up near Cleveland, OH and always remember the joy and wonder of fireflies in the summer. When I moved down here, I though maybe they just didn't have fireflies because I never saw them. It turns out, they all like to hang out in the woods where no one sprays for mosquitos (another downfall to all the rampant spraying of insecticides but I won't go there right now). We headed down for a nighttime stroll through the woods to see the fireflies. I brought my camera, but not my tripod, so I was limited on what I could capture. As we walked down the road that weaved through the woods, I looked up and saw the moon between the trees and captured it. It wasn't fireflies, but I'll always remember our magical walk through the woods that night. (The fireflies were everywhere, it was pretty amazing!)

I'd love to know which one was your favorite?
